Top 10 things dogs should not eat ? feeding your dog

Hello, Guardians

Now let’s get your new best friend fed because there are many things that we like to do, such as sleep and play but most of all we like to eat. Yes, we will eat anything that you can think of, even if we know its not good for us.

Now, you must be thinking, I have a small breed dog so what is the best dog food on the market for small dogs or you have a large breed dog and you are thinking what is the best dog food on the market for large dogs? Don’t worry we are going to get to that let me tell you a story first.

Story: When I stopped eating for a week

In the eight years that I have been on this earth, I have eaten many things in my life, some things I like and some things I hate. There are things like beans which I just refuse to eat.

One thing is certain there are some foods that dogs should not eat because it could either kill us or make us really sick.

In South Africa, Tania always bought the best dog food for mom and I. The food was certified by the Vet but when we moved to Italy, Tania would not let me eat the Pizza and the pasta and I didn’t like any of the various dry and wet dog foods they had on offer.

My Guardians tried everything and for a whole week, I refused to eat anything because I was in Italy and I wanted to eat pizza and pasta, you know all the good stuff that comes from here. I would have also gone for the Lasagna too but my name is Puccini and not Garfield.

I would not even eat the rice and chicken that I loved eating when I was feeling a bit sick.

Fortunately, they found a brand that I liked. One thing was for sure, my guardians have always given me the best food that money can buy, however, when I stopped eating.

I discovered that I did not like salmon and tomato made me want to vomit. I found that I liked a mix of dry dog food and wet dog food with 65% meat, no grains and 25% fruits and vegetables.

Later we can go into the meaning the percentages but let me reveal the foods that dogs should not eat.

Top 10 things dogs should not eat

Dogs will eat anything whether it’s on the floor or in a plate, but there are things that dogs should not eat. Here are the top 10 things:

  • 1. Chocolate: I know it's so good! But no, the chocolate is poison for dogs and that goes for all types of chocolate, white, milk of and don't forget the Cyanide of chocolate for dogs, fondant. Oh! And while we're at it, that also includes stuff like gum, candy and baked goods as it contains sugar and our teeth go rotten.
  • 2. Fat trimmed from meat and bones: this causes us to pick up weight and the bones splinter and block our digestive systems.
  • 3. Avocados: it causes vomiting and diarrhoea
  • 4. Alcohol:  I would like to have a beer in a bar but my brain and stomachs are very small, imagine what alcohol does to us when it affects humans that and their brains are big
  • 5. Garlic and onions: It dehydrates us and causes vomiting and breathing issues.
  • 6. Coffee and tea:  the caffeine has the same effect on us as in humans, makes us hyperactive
  • 7. Grapes and raisins: it causes kidney failure and it's full of sugar
  • 8. Milk and ice cream: dairy products causes issues with the digestive system or trigger allergies, you know when we always get blamed when there is a little odour in the air, well dairy does that to us for real.
  • 9. Raw meat and fish: Will you eat it? Well, maybe sushi is your favourite, but we prefer cooked food.
  • 10. Salt: It's just as bad for dogs than for humans

Needless to say, if you see there is something wrong like vomiting and diarrhoea, it is better to take your dog to the vet for a check-up.

The things that dogs can eat

OK, now you ask what can dogs eat other than dry and wet dog food, hold on I’m getting to the dry and wet food bit. I have to tell you first what we can eat and what is good for us.

1. When in doubt ask your vet for advice.

2. We can have a special treat sometimes, but make sure it is cooked, unseasoned and not fatty with no bones like white rice or pasta with some boiled chicken, a healthy snack of carrot sticks, green beans, cucumber slices, or zucchini slices and some fruits. (OK only if your dog like it, I personally don’t.  I won’t eat it) I like rice and chicken and apples.

3. I have also included a link for a cookbook “Canine Cuisine ebook” if you want to cook a health meal for your four legged family member.

As a bonus I have includes a free calorie counter to determine if Poggy needs for a diet.

Feeding Times

I have breakfast and dinner with my Guardians. I eat when they eat and it makes me feel very special when I know I also get a meal that is specially prepared for me.

We should all have our meals at the same time every day, whether you have a puppy, a full-grown or a senior dog. Puppies should eat some small meals during the day, while the more mature guys like me should get one or two meals a day.

Again have a relationship with your vet to figure out the best type and portion of food for your dog.

The benefit of eating at the same time every day is that it makes it easier to predict when we need to do our business, especially trying to implement daily routines or when we were being house-trained. Later I will tell you how I was house-trained when we go through the daily routines.

I almost forgot, we also like some variations, how would you like to eat the same food day in and day out.

Next up

The next time we look at what to consider when choosing the best dog food on the market for small dogs and the best dog food on the market for large dogs, both the wet and dry kind.

It’s important to know what we can and cannot eat and at what times we should eat.

Hello, I must say that this article is very helpful and informative. I have two adult dogs and your text really helped me to learn some new things about our best friends. Honestly, I did not know they should not eat chocolate, I often give it to them as they enjoy it. I will definitely pay more attention to it, thank you for sharing your knowledge.

      Hello Danjel

Thank you for your comment. Yes, we like chocolate because it is sweet but chocolate has a toxic ingredient called theobromine. Humans easily metabolize it, but dogs process it much more slowly, allowing it to build up to toxic levels in their system.

I guess the same applies to humans too, they all like fries but it may not be good for them, as the fat blogs their arteries.

Keep up the questions love to see my information is valuable.

      Regards Puccini

What a wonderful and creative article on dogs and the best foods of them.

Dogs certainly require food like the rest of us, but most times we tend to offer them things that aren’t good for their health. My neighbour had a little bull dog that passed away several days ago, and the vet confirmed the cause to be the dog’s diet. He was always fed bones and uncooked fish and meat and milk, and being yet a small dog, it could not perhaps handle the diet and it passed away.

Dog owners must learn to know the kind of food dogs like, and also the food they’re supposed to eat.

Thanks for the informative post. I’m sharing this with friends.

Going out to consciously get the best food for your dog is always out of love for these lovely creatures. My take away from your article today is obvious and I cannot just but share. When I buy meat for my dogs, I don’t remove the fat before cooking, although I don’t buy just fat but I watch out for meet that has little fat.
Now I know that this is wrong, like you said it makes them grow weight and block their digestive system, I will stop this practice and look out for meet without fat

Some of these “do not feed” foods made me laugh like avocado and chocolates. Who in their right mind would give a dog this food? I’m not a dog person but I think this is common sense. Now, I have seen many people like to feed them meat, especially sausage.
